Today was the last Sunday of the season, as Advent begins next week. The looking-forward-to-Christmas is one of my favorite parts of the year, in spite of the inevitable scrambles and sudden panics that usually occur. And as if by magic to mark the transition, it started to snow. It didn't really snow as much as predicted, and hardly a lick remains on the ground. But it's the principle of the thing. Symbolic! I'm still holding out on playing the Christmas music until December 1, but by the skin of my teeth.

It was also my father's 100th birthday. I bought a cake from the supermarket, the most sugary and unnatural one that caught my eye. Although my father appreciated a nice homebaked cake, he loved to buy cake from the store. I suppose it was a relic of his childhood, when fancy storebought goods were a luxury that was quite out of reach. I posted a picture of it on the siblings text. The Duchess suggested that "to gild the lily," as she put it, I should eat at least one piece "army style," meaning off the palm of your hand, without benefit of plate or utensils, and for breakfast. I plan to do exactly that.

And, in a surprise twist, Mr. Science posted the birth of his grandchild that everyone has been waiting for! He promised more news later, so we're not exactly sure if the baby was born today or yesterday, but we saw the picture, and it was beautiful. It would be an unexpected bonus if a new life took over the Old German's birthdate! Er lebe hoch!

Cake for breakfast is a lovely memorial.
