Definitely a better day. We went out and got Easter candy for the kids. This goes back a long way. When they were really little, my father used to buy candy and sometimes bacon or other things, and bring them by our house on Saturday, or maybe give them to us if we stopped by his house. When we had to move away from Michigan, the young Philosopher asked, "But how will Grandfather give us our candy if we're so far away?" My father was touched by this, and he started making "care packages" with candy and books in them (no bacon) and sending them to us as we moved around the country. When the kids grew older and went away to college, we took up the tradition. We usually send out packages for Valentine's Day, Easter, and Halloween. And Christmas, if they aren't coming for Christmas. The Christmas candy is a two-part process: first, gold coins for Nikolaus Tag on December 6 (people always think it's Hanukkah gelt), and then Christmas candy.

Then I made some notes on scenes for my sequel, which is a cut above just doing research, and then we went out for a pretty long walk by the lake. The Sparrowhawk still didn't feel up to the gym, but he was well enough for walking and listening to the blackbirds.

I dreamed about a girl who was setting up many magic spells, but they all needed salt water to set them in motion. She spent a lot of time digging a channel from the ocean into the town where she lived. Just at the end of the dream, the ocean finally flowed down the channel and activated all her spells. I woke up with words flowing through my mind: "And suddenly, all over town, stopped clocks ticked again, old cats jumped off their cushions and became young and fluffy, lost rings rolled out of concealment, and in some cases, unkind young women broke out in bright pink spots, and pompous school administrators tripped over unseen obstacles and fell into undignified positions." It's always a better day when I can bring some words out of the dreamtime. This also made me understand some things about the concept of magic that I'm working with right now.
