Perhaps you would like to know the curious assemblage of foods I have packed for a week-long trip. The most important item is the Dred Sandwich, aka Oreos, because the Diva is coming, and it's the one thing she reminded me to bring. It's a traditional trip food since the 90s when we lived in Kansas, I think. We also have to bring our own Earl Grey teabags and a jar of honey. Then there are carrot and celery sticks, bread and butter, PB and jam, cheese, yogurt, clementines, sliced ham, mayo and mustard, cookies (different from the Oreos), a little chocolate, hard-boiled eggs, and in this case, some hot cross buns. Yes, there are restaurants at our destination, but eating out for days at a time can be difficult. Sometimes you just want a little tea and snack in your room, without having to put the public pants on.

I took Madame out today, and while I was at it, bought a new road atlas. I looked at the date on ours, and it was from 2013. Perhaps time to indulge in a new one. I also got an Illinois road atlas. Madame was very much interested in the idea of the eclipse, even though I told her it would be only partial in Michigan. She was so much interested that I bought her two pairs of eclipse glasses--thank goodness the bookstore was selling them. I got one for her and an extra in case she has a friend who wants to see too. I don't want her to look at the sun and hurt her eyes! When I got home, I started running around madly, assembling the aforementioned emergency rations, making a quick trip to the store, doing my laundry . . . . I'm tired. And yet not ready! I still have to get up in the morning, put everything in the cooler and try to figure out what to do to keep my plants from dying while I'm gone.

The Sparrowhawk and I are both slightly in the dumps, because neither of us is feeling at our best, and we are anxious about our expedition. We can't chicken out, because the Diva will be expecting us! We have to go! Challengers of the Unknown! It would be easier if the weather were better. The weather gods seem to cast obstacles in our path every time we want to make a foray. Today we had constant bands of rain, with intervals of a bleak and feeble ray of sun shooting through the slate grey clouds. And then two rounds of sleet. And then actual hail! It's supposed to rain much of the day tomorrow, which I am NOT looking forward to. We're going to take the southern route through Indianapolis and hope for the best . . . .

Safe travels. Charlotte and I road-tripped to Tennessee for the 2017 eclipse, to visit our friend Laura and her husband. It was pretty awesome.
