Angler of Bliss
Apr. 14th, 2024 08:19 pmThis was a beautiful sunny day. almost 75 degrees. It was almost like summer. On this day seven years ago, it was snowing, so one can't get too comfy with it. That could still happen again. Anyway, we wanted to take advantage of it, and planned to go to the botanical gardens, where the cherry trees are in bloom. As we approached, we saw a long line of cars in the exit lane to the place, and once inside, a long line of cars going up the drive! The parking lots were all full, and we noticed crowds of people streaming into the entrance. We continued to drive right out the back exit and left. Clearly this was not our day to see the cherry trees. I don't know what was going on. Probably it was one of those charity walks for some good cause.
We went over to the little lake and started to walk down to the dock. The Sparrowhawk was not having one of his better days, so we were going slowly and stopping to sit down several times. We made it to the end of the dock and saw many pleasant sights, including a log with a row of eight painted turtles sunning themselves, another log with just one perfect tiny turtle the size of a soup spoon, and two big fat bullfrogs in the shades of an overhanging tree. However, on the way back, the Sparrowhawk's mojo gave out conclusively and he had to sit down and ask me to go get the car. It took me about ten minutes to get back to where we'd parked, as I'm not very fast-moving myself. I fixed us a restorative bite to eat, and then suggested we could sit in the back yard. But when I tried to park myself in the one remaining lawn chair, it collapsed. The set--four chairs, an umbrella, and a table--was bought on sale ten years ago, so I guess it's not surprising that all but the table have failed at this point. Nevertheless, it was adding insult to injury to find that not only could we not perambulate as well as we could ten years ago, but I couldn't even manage to sit down without falling out of my chair! A certain amount of gloom invaded the sunny day, and we both wished it were not quite so sunny and cheerful, so we'd feel justified in just going to bed.
I had a Zoom with Moonmoth and the Nonesuch. We discussed the eclipse and other topics that revived some cheer. Still, it wasn't quite the exuberant time we'd been hoping for on such an auspicious morning.
