The good news is that those ears of corn I bought had not a single corn borer in them! Nothing but delicious pale kernels, sweet as sugar. The other good news is that it was Another Beautiful Day (tm). I know that every day brings us closer to the inevitable frost, but for now the frail beauty of fall is holding.

Not so great news is that we still seem to be pretty tired. There's a lot to be done, but after waking up early, we went back to bed for a nap, by tacit consensus, instead of doing any of it! I had the Big Old House dream, where you find yourself living in a mysterious ancient structure that has more rooms in it than you expected. We were still tired even after waking up. My knee is slowly getting better, but my legs are still stiff and sore. So once again, instead of attempting projects, we goofed off--went to the bakery and ate sandwiches plus a "Nightmare on Hall Street," which is a latte with hazelnut and vanilla. Why that would be anyone's nightmare is inexplicable! It was delicious. We got home just in time to sit in the backyard while the Sparrowhawk read and I typed up my answers to an interview that will be published in an ERB fanzine in conjunction with the book. One of the questions asked was about my early life. It called up too many memories to share. I had to be selective. Eventually I developed a killer headache and had to go inside and take Advil. I felt too bad to go to church. I'm feeling better--just in time to go to bed!

In lieu of amusing incidents from today, I'll relate one from Wednesday, when I took Madame out. She couldn't decide what to eat, and said she'd have the same as me. I was ordering Honey Chicken Salad. I warned her it had chicken in it. She ignored this comment and ordered it anyway. She really enjoyed it and kept saying "This is so tasty! And I don't see any chicken, do you?" Um, yeah, there was quite a lot of chicken! I said tactfully, "It's called chicken salad, so I think it must have chicken in it somewhere!" She paid no attention and chowed down like there was no tomorrow. I felt compelled to send her daughter a text to warn her. Madame has always presented herself as a total vegan, raw food preferred, and has often told me that if she ever ate any meat, she would be sure to get sick, because she has never eaten meat in so many years. I thought Mademoiselle should know, in case she started complaining of feeling ill. Mademoiselle appreciated the note, but said she thought her mom could probably handle a little chicken. I'm beginning to think Madame may eat more meat than she'll admit to--perhaps like Professor Bernardo de la Paz in "The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress," designating a slice of ham as "that pink salmon." Or perhaps I have finally succeeded in leading her astray . . . .

That sounds like a lovely laidback day! I am about to go out again for a bit into the sunshine.
