TurkeyDay of Ember
Nov. 28th, 2024 09:31 pmBy cooking slowly and steadily all day long, I managed to get almost everything done in time for early evening dinner. The turkey was IMMENSE. The farm ladies were apologetic--they said they couldn't help it, the turkeys just grew really big this year. I didn't stuff it, because the Redhead is here and can't have gluten. Instead, I invented a cornbread and sausage stuffing, made with a gluten-free cornbread mix that is good, plus onion, celery and mushrooms. And a fair amount of butter. It was surprisingly tasty. I might even like it better than regular stuffing. We also had brussels sprouts with bacon, mashed potatoes, salad, and corn pudding again made with no gluten. It's more like a quiche with eggs, cheese and milk supporting the corn in a custard-like medium. We also had sweet potato rolls for the gluten lovers. Raptor had three (or was it four?)
During the day, people supported themselves with a delicious cheese plate and various fruits and chocolates. First we watched the dog show, and then the Lions vs. Bears, which the Sparrowhawk dvr-ed. At one point when there was a lull, the Sparrowhawk and I took a short walk over to the woods. It was COLD. I had my new red sweater on. This is the first day that felt truly wintry. The Nipper and the Sparrowhawk went out and found some gluten-free piecrust, and I found a pie crust I apparently made and put in the freezer at some earlier date. The pies just came out of the oven. They're a little browner than one would like, because I'm not accustomed to baking with these crusts. But I'm sure with a little ice cream to hide the burnt bits, they'll be fine.
Know what I forgot? The cranberry sauce! I knew there was something missing! Oh well. It's good with leftovers. Maybe tomorrow.
