We both woke up too early today, but that meant we got to see the sunrise, which was something I wanted. There was a streak of paler grey in a crack in the clouds in the east, far to the south. Eventually the light leaked in and the sky got paler, and then there were streaks of pink above. That was as good as it got for a couple of hours. Nevertheless, I was excited! The shortest day had come! It can only get better from here. Later in the day, actual sunshine appeared for a time.

After that, we had to go back to bed for a couple of hours. I feel as if I'm coming down with another cold, but I honestly don't know what normal feels like any more! I was just too miserable to do anything but lie down, and the Sparrowhawk was coughing a lot too. I wasn't magically well when I woke up again, but I was better enough to go to the farmers market and get some meat for the Christmas pies, some vegetables, some spiced nuts, and some extra milk and butter. On the way home, we stopped at the garden store to pick out a Christmas tree, which the Sparrowhawk picked up later when he went out to do errands. I was up again for a couple more hours, trying to get into my writing space, but being somewhat impeded by texting with several different people simultaneously, and then the arrival of our neighbors from next door. They always bring over a card and a small box of cookies at Christmas. Last year, the cookies were kind of penitential, but this year, they're pretty good so far! They warned us they had put whisky in one of the frostings, in case we were allergic to it--haha fat chance. So we ate those right away, just to check: dark spice cookies with whisky flavored frosting. Mmm good! And then--another goldurn NAP. I've been sick off and on since October, and now the Sparrowhawk is sick too. And it's not even covid. It's just crap. Viral anarchy is loosed upon the world . . . .

Tomorrow will be a whole four seconds longer than today! I'm looking forward to that. Even though I'll probably sleep through those four seconds.

I made solstice soup, using my garlicky pork bone broth and some chicken and vegetables.
