Oh my, what a day. I'm typing gingerly because my fingertips are actually a bit sore from all the scrubbing of pots and whatnot. We continued to whiz around the house completing one essential task after another until around noon, when first the Duchess arrived with Grandmother and dropped her off with walker, cane, suitcase, garment bag, handbag, toiletries kit, and a big plastic bag with all her meds done up in blister packs and a list of instructions. The Duchess couldn't stay--she was in a big hurry to get to the church and dress it up for the wedding. Then the Sparrowhawk returned from the airport with Tron and the Lumberjack, and finally, Queenie and the Fireman and the Gazelle, their younger daughter rolled in. I served soup, sandwiches, cookies, and coffee to all who wanted it. Queenie & co had grabbed a bite en route. It was a beautiful day and so lovely to see the house full of dear people! it smelled really good from the soup and the cake I'd just taken out of the oven.

After lunch, Queenie and family went back to the hotel for a nap, and Grandmother went upstairs for the same. The Lumberjack hauled the old desk on which he'd written his master's thesis out of the basement and took it to Goodwill, with great satisfaction. He and Tron stopped at the store on the way back to bring us some more milk and butter. I made the frosting for two cakes and concocted a potato salad while the Sparrowhawk presided over barbecue and made the mac and cheese.

Around six, everyone, plus Queenie's second daughter, the Former Naval Person, re-converged and all was briefly chaos as we assembled dinner. The Lumberjack mixed cocktails for all who wanted them. Today is Queenie's birthday, and Tron (who shares a name with her in real life) gave her some gifts that were just inexpressibly tender and thoughtful, and Queenie cried. Dinner was delicious, and the giant piles of food we'd been preparing the the event melted away with astounding speed. After dinner, there was a March of the Cakes, with Tron and the Lumberjack assisting me to carry them in. There were three April birthdays, so I'd prepared three cakes--even though one of the birthday people didn't show, and the Nipper, who was the second, won't be here until near midnight. However, we lit ALL the candles, and Queenie cried again at the sight of everyone singing Happy Birthday.

Tron, the Lumberjack, and the FNP cleaned up the kitchen in hyperdrive and somehow left it sparkling. And then everyone sat around over cake until they needed to sleep. After they left, the house was strangely quiet! The Sparrowhawk and I pulled out the futons that the Philosopher and Raptor will be sleeping on and put the sheets on them. We hadn't had time to do that earlier. then I cleared the cake remnants off the table and put another round of dishes in the dishwasher, and the Sparrowhawk had a bit of a nap. Now he's picking up the Philosopher from the train station while I await the Nipper and his family who should be here any minute. Tomorrow the wild rumpus begins again . . . .

Things that were cooked and eaten so far:
A roast chicken
Giant pot of leek and potato soup with chicken
Homemade bread and butter
Sandwich meat
Cookies
Barbecued brisket and ribs
The Sparrowhawk's hand-crafted baked beans
Potato salad
Cole slaw
Mac and cheese
Three cakes: One gluten-free lemon cream cake
One ET cake
One Chocolate Stout cake that was three layers high and must have weighed about five pounds

We didn't eat all of the cakes up, fortunately. The Nipper still has to get his share, and I'm hoping I might have some left over for when another couple of friends are coming to visit next week. Oof, we are TIRED and we still have to get all dressed up and go to a wedding tomorrow!

I wish all good things for you and your family. Congratulations on the impending wedding, and on your heroic cooking efforts (which, wow, I am impressed. If I did that much, I'd injure myself).

No wonder your fingers are sore!

There's a local bakery that makes an amazing GF lemon cream cake -- it's so delicious it routinely sells to gluten-eaters. Which makes me suspect there's a hella GF lemon cream cake recipe floating around somewhere. When you're rested -- say mid-May -- I'd love to hear where you got yours.
