I'm feeling very grumpy, as few would not after a night of waking up every hour on the hour. I find myself identifying with John of the Cross's description of people who find their own imperfections difficult to tolerate: "And because of this distastefulness, they become peevish in the works they do and easily angered by the least thing, and occasionally they are so unbearable that nobody can put up with them." Fortunately the Sparrowhawk seems more amused than irritated by my grumblings and Wookiee noises. While we were in Pittsburgh, we were talking about Yinzer speech, which is the dialect of western Pennsylvanians who say "yinz" (a version of you-uns) for the plural second person. A common part of speech is "and that," but pronounced more like "'n 'nat." It can be added to almost anything. "I went to the Jahnt Iggle, 'n 'nat." "I had scrapple for breakfast, 'n 'nat." "I had a sixpack of Yuengling and watched the Stillers 'n 'nat." Ms. Science reported hearing someone say, "Gawd help us, 'n 'nat." This has become my favorite prayer of the moment. Gawd help us, 'n 'nat!

Speaking of Ms. Science, I had to turn down the invitation to attend another event in honor of my brother. The date is bracketed by pre-existing commitments, so it would have to be another flying trip, and I'm just not up for it. We got so sick the last time that I'm not willing to try it again right now. Perhaps we will see her later this summer under more leisurely conditions. The Duchess is planning to go, so at least someone will represent.

When I went to pick Madame up today, she was seated at a table with several other residents and a staff member, having "tea." She was astonished to see me, but ready to go. She is in much better shape physically after the infusion and her move to memory care. I think her confusion is worse than before, though she still has some remarkably lucid moments. She is forgetting more things, and I think she has forgotten the name of the bookstore we go to. She ordered her favorite salad, but hardly ate any of it. She is quite definite about NOT wanting to go back to her current residence, and also definite that she does NOT live there. She just happens to be there, for reasons inexplicable to her. For some reason, she thinks she's living "in the basement," even though the whole facility is on one level and has many bright windows. However, when it was time to go, she went back without any protest. I returned her a bit early in case she wanted to take part in a trip to the botanical gardens that the staff had planned. I hope they were able to talk her into going, because I know she would enjoy seeing the flowers and everything. It was a beautiful morning, and she was delighted to see the trees flowering and leafing out all along our road.
