AspenThicket of Bliss
May. 3rd, 2018 09:45 pmLast night I actually got some sleep, and my legs were a lot less painful and stiff. It was hot yesterday, and although today was cloudy and cooler, after a night of rain, I thought I'd wear something lighter than my usual winter jeans and pullover. I'm not a dress kind of person, but just for fun, I put on this cotton dress I have that's red with white polka dots. White polka dots, of course, go well with pearls, so I put on the little pearl necklace my father gave me when I graduated from high school, and the really beautiful pearl earrings the Sparrowhawk bought for me in an antique store. I thought it would be fun for him to see me wearing something different for a change. Alas, when he got out of the shower, he wasn't ready to admire me. Due to his idiosyncratic way of washing what's left of his hair, he'd gotten an eyeful of shampoo and was in great pain with tears streaming out of his eyes. It was an hour or so before he could be properly impressed. Meanwhile, his poor eye was very red and puffed up.
I wished we could just go out for breakfast to forget our troubles, but I'm trying to spend less money at the moment. I've been working on remembering to enjoy things I already have. One thing I already had was a bag of self-rising flour. I put two cups of that and some sugar in a bowl, mixed up three eggs and a little oil, and added milk until it was pourable, put on my apron and made delicious pancakes with strawberries and some leftover lemon cream from the recent cake, which I'd stashed in the refrigerator. The Sparrowhawk was cheered up by being served fancy pancakes by a woman in a red dress, pearls, AND an apron. He does live the life, in spite of occasional unforeseen circumstances. No heels, though. I do have some limits. I prefer to be barefoot in the kitchen.
