We've been getting tired and going to bed luxuriously early, unwilling to delay this by blogging. Not that there's been much excitement to blog about. Saturday night we Zoomed briefly with the Philosopher, with occasional irruptions from irrepressible Aquinas, who now recognizes his own face on the screen, and shouts his own name, or occasionally "Mirror!" After awhile, the Lovely Friend took him away to feed him dinner. He's wielding his spoon with great panache, undaunted by what happens when he tries to use it upside down. The Philosopher seemed tired and in a bit of a rush. He had just come home from grocery shopping. He's still job-hunting. He has reached the final cut of several interview processes, but in the end has not been picked. He's still looking. He doesn't seem too stressed out by this, and the good side of it is that Aquinas gets to spend more time with daddy. Aquinas showed off the firetruck on his shirt, and was willing to tell us his favorite zoo animals and what they say before he became bashful. Then he demonstrated his ability to take off all his clothes and go on the run, so the Philosopher had to sign off and chase him down.

Yesterday, I made a chocolate cake, because we were going to a going-away party for a friend. It was over 90, so I put the cake in the refrigerator to keep it from going all melty. This was in vain. The party was out in the back yard, and it was pretty hot. Nevertheless, most of it got eaten, leaving just enough for the Sparrowhawk to have some to take home. Our hosts lived way out on the west side of town, and as we were coming back, the sky was spread out before us. The evening clouds were surpassingly beautiful, as they sailed along with their tops all blinding white and golden with the sinking sun, and their shadowed sides in all delicate colors of grey, slate, and pearl. This side of the state has the best clouds.

I've had a lot of broken sleep in the last few days, mostly a combo of headache and mulling over my poor life choices, a type of folly that I'm wise enough to avoid during the day time, but sometimes fall prey to when debilitated by darkness and discomfort. My friend the Nonesuch has dubbed this Mulled Whine, which I think is awesome and should be a chapter in my memoirs--perhaps right after Justify Yourself!

This took me OUT. I burst out in a great guffaw of laughter.
