SalmonFry of Flourish
Sep. 3rd, 2025 07:50 pmI had a wretched night for reasons unknown, and woke up feeling terrible. There was one good part to the night: when I finally got some sleep just before dawn, I had a lovely dream in which the Sparrowhawk's brother Fritz had decided on his next post-retirement job. He had opened a used bookstore filled with the most spectacular and wonderful editions. There was a lot of gilt and sparkly bindings involved. As part of the bookstore, he offered the opportunity to learn manuscript illumination, a skill I already know something about. I decided I would try to participate, and was just getting my watercolors and brushes in order when I woke up.
The waking was not nice at all. The Sparrowhawk was on the phone for ages trying to get someone to come and fix the dishwasher, which has broken down and started leaking again. It's piece of crap--Asko, fyi--and has never worked right. We only bought it because they said it would take a million years to order a Bosch. I put on my clothes and ran around re-tidying the bathroom for the advent of the plumber we'd had to postpone because of the Philosopher's visit.
Then I left the Sparrowhawk to entertain the plumber and went to see Madame. It was a dark day, threatening rain. I thought she seemed a bit tired, and her feet and ankles are badly swollen again. I made a snap decision not to take her out of the building. I think it would have been too much for both of us. But she was rarin' to go somewhere, so I suggested the bistro on the first floor again. Imagine my surprise when we arrived at the elevator, and it was out of order. She was determined that she could go down the stairs, so we parked the walker in a corner, and she went down, holding to the railings on each side, with me in front to catch her in case of a mishap. She did a pretty good job. I got her seated, then ran back up and carried the walker down. We were fortunate in our choice of refreshments: fruit cup, pastry, and coffee were tasty and just enough. It was lucky I didn't urge her to have a salad, for reasons that will become evident in a minute.
I had been worried about getting her back UP the stairs, but again we were lucky, and encountered a staff person who showed us how to get to the service elevator, which took us right where we wanted to go. I stayed and chatted for awhile and then came home on time for once. I sent a quick text report to Mademoiselle and the other friends, and learned that the elevator has been broken for two weeks! Nobody bothered to tell me. I also learned from Mademoiselle that Madame had choked on a lettuce leaf last night, had to have the Heimlich maneuver performed, and hyperventilated. That would explain why she seemed tired. And that's why I'm glad there was no salad today!
It started raining torrentially about noon, validating my decision not to go out. It kept raining most of the afternoon. After I got home, I was completely exhausted and really unable to focus on anything. It's been torture to keep awake this long. Let's hope tomorrow is a better day, because Bird Baby is planning to visit.
