Tumbleweed of Flourish
Sep. 8th, 2025 08:35 pmI'm now doing my imitation of a consumptive poet, minus the part where I'm interestingly pale and thin, but including the part where I cough my lungs up an inch at a time. And also lounging in lethargy upon the couch. This is good, because I have to go through this stage to reach my ultimate victory, but it's still not fun. Last night the full moon cast a bright silvery light on the bedroom floor, and I was awake to contemplate it. Today, the weather was again beautiful, a little warmer than yesterday, and we sat in the back yard for awhile. My voice is not at all poetic, but more like a comic frog in a fairy tale. Nevertheless, I had my usual phone conversation with Queenie this morning, and then a Zoom with Moonmoth and the Nonesuch in the afternoon. I cooked up some kielbasa for the Sparrowhawk's post-gym morsel. First I fried some onions, cut the sausage into attractively sized bits and fried it a little with the onions while the oven was preheating. Then I put in just enough apple cider to simmer and left it in the oven until the cider had bonded with the sausage and formed a bit of a glaze.
Jim Gunn of the Center for Science Fiction at KU used to describe certain stories, many of which were SF, as "Hubris pursued by Nemesis." The Sparrowhawk and I have discussed how this applies to the Columbo reruns we sometimes watch as a treat. Tonight he sent me a picture of himself supine at the gym, with the caption "Hubris flattened by Nemesis." It's kinda the story of our lives at the moment! We are quite the pair. I will now go and recline where Nemesis can have its way with me more conveniently.
