WildSteed of Flourish
Sep. 10th, 2025 07:55 pmThis morning, I was up before the Sparrowhawk, listening to a lone chickadee piping its melodic, plaintive little whistle, and then to the distant drumming of the marching band in the Village a mile away. Along with the music, a curious scent filtered through the open window: something that smelled hot and slightly mechanical. Our neighbor the contractor was up, but had not yet started up any machines. Then I figured it out--a concrete mixer had just trundled into the yard of the house behind the contractor, and as I watched, it came to life with a grinding roar and began spewing concrete for their new driveway. That's what I'd been smelling.
Later, the AC guy came around to give our system its yearly tuneup. He found a spot in the outdoor unit where some wires had burned and fused together. He had to replace the capacitor. I asked him what might have made that happen, and he shrugged and blamed it on loose wiring. He said it can be caused by small animals, but normally if that happens, you find the perpetrator laid out next to his work. It was just a mystery. However, I do remember smelling something burnt a couple of weeks ago, wandering around looking at things, and concluding it must be someone's grill or something. I'm happy to say that as often as I've had covid, it's had no effect on my olfactory acuity. You could still put me out in the forest, and I'd smell the predators arriving.
I excused myself from visiting Madame today. I am feeling better, but still coughing and wheezing. I doubt that I'm contagious, but you never know. Also, from a purely selfish viewpoint, I would like to be all the way better for the Sparrowhawk's birthday, so I'm hoarding my energy. I don't want to extend myself for Madame's sake and end up having a relapse. I tried not to do too much with my unexpected free time. I did a bunch of laundry, including the sheets and towels. The Sparrowhawk got an unexpected free evening, too, because Coach was also sick, and canceled gym for tonight. In lieu of other exercise, we had the pleasure of taking a walk together.
