Mother's Day
May. 13th, 2018 09:54 pmWell, that was a trip and a half. We arrived at my mother's place before lunch and found her all dressed up and ready to go. While I was asking her if she still felt all right after her fall, I noticed what looked like a spot of blood on her pressure stocking. I asked about it, and she admitted she had a sore spot on her leg. I asked if she'd mind if I had a look, rolled the stocking down, and saw a large bleeding spot where the skin had broken down. The rest of her leg was clearly edematous and purple, too. Ai yi yi. One of the helpers came in and was shocked to see this--she hadn't told them about it. She said she was hoping it would get better by itself. I'm so worried that this will become another leg ulcer like the ones she had last year. Pressure stockings and elevating her feet were supposed to help her avoid this, but she doesn't like either one of those things and always tries to get around them. I called the Duchess and consulted about whether I should take her to the hospital. Meanwhile, the care supervisor came in and cleaned and dressed the wound. The Duchess and I decided that no more than that could be done for her today anyway. I will call the doctor first thing tomorrow and set up an appointment for her to get a good diagnosis. And probably a referral back to the Wound Clinic, alas.
We got to the buffet a little late, but had a nice lunch with her. After lunch, Deb and the Prussian dropped by to say hello. Deb brought a beautiful bunch of wine-colored purple lilacs from her own yard. They will smell wonderful as they open. Mother kept nodding off, so we got her to lie down on the couch and really put her feet up on some cushions. Normally, she props her feet on a footstool and calls that "elevating" them, but it isn't. She seemed to enjoy napping in the middle of our conversation, and occasionally perking up to contribute a comment. When it was time for her dinner, we walked her to the dining room and then went home.
I have to say that my kids are what made the day for me. Tron, the Nipper, and the Philosopher all called, and the Diva sent me the funniest and sweetest email. Tron had already sent me a beautiful card. Just hearing from all of them was the best. I hope that when they come to see me if/when I'm 92, it will be a little less traumatic for them. One of my big current goals is to be as healthy and sane as I can when I get older, insofar as that is under my control. All the love helps.
