I had my usual chat with Queenie this morning. Her church has to open the cold shelter tonight, and this is a responsibility that she and the Fireman and a couple of other people who are rather too old for this sort of thing have to take on. I confess to not understanding Florida weather, but I guess it actually gets too cold for comfort sometimes. Here, it was 26 degrees when I drove to the clinic to get my blood drawn. My hip joint went on strike when I tried to hustle across the parking lot. I was like "Come on, we can have more range of motion than this!" and it was like, "No thank you, you are not the boss of me and it's too cold." The lab waiting room was FULL. People had mostly donned their puffy coats, although there were a few intrepid souls like me who were content with a little fleece jacket.

When I got home, I made the Sparrowhawk's first breakfast. The sky was that perfect, pellucid pale blue. Our neighbor's sugar maple tree dropped all its leaves overnight, and his front yard is awash in gold. Our back yard is even deeper in leaves, and more leaves came twirling and gliding down, like butterflies. More snow fell in the night so the puffy comforter of white was deeper. The sun is so far south now that it never seems to rise above the roof of the house. The angle of light makes everything glow.

We still have plenty of food left over. We've started referring to the pulled pork as "meat candy." Our friend Nebraska had a heart issue and is now on one of those special minus everything heart-healthy diets. He ate some of the pork, however, and the Sparrowhawk said he kept saying "Oh this is so good. It's going to kill me." When I first heard this, I felt bad because I don't want to harm anyone with my perfidious cooking! However, I think it's unlikely that it really will do him any harm. We have to hope not, anyway.
