Mistletoe of Sleet
Jan. 28th, 2026 07:38 pmThis was day 2 of feeling slightly traumatized by the idea of driving, but we will have to leave the house at some point, so the Sparrowhawk got to work on finding a rental car. This turned out to be harder than one would think! So many people have crashed their cars recently that there is high demand for replacements. Some places had nothing available. Avis gave us an option: a minivan or a Yukon, take it or leave it. In fact, the manager wasn't even supposed to rent out the Yukon because they were trying to sell it, but he let us have it. The Sparrowhawk took a cab to the rental place. He said the cab driver was very careful. While he was out, I shoveled out the rest of the driveway so we'd have someplace to put it. The plow ridge was extensive and well-packed. That was work.
Just to make everything puddle-wonderful, our roof is leaking in the family room. It's the same place that leaked last time there was a big pile-up of snow, and supposedly they fixed it. But alas, I don't think you can ever really fix a leaky roof. Total replacement is pretty much the only way. But you can't do that when there's two feet of snow on the roof and it's below zero. The roofer has a service that will come and shovel the snow off your roof. This is not a thing we could do ourselves unless we had a death wish. They will come tomorrow and do that, and maybe the roof will stop leaking for a time. Meanwhile, I have an elaborate arrangement of buckets and towels that I'm keeping my eye on, for controlling the symptoms.
Today is a great day, in spite of roof leaks, because it's Tron's birthday! She was kind enough to share a bit of the day with us via Zoom. I had seen the cake the Lumberjack made for her yesterday. She's going to watch a movie with her BFF in Califormia by way of their phones. She was looking happy and cozy.
In other news, the Sparrowhawk was heard to observe pensively that it has been a long time since there were any cookies. He has had occasion to remark on this before. It has been in the back of my mind, but circumstances have not been favorable. I browned the butter and made another batch of cowboy cookies, which are cooling even now.
