MajesticLoon of Trill
This morning, there was frost on the rooftops and the grass! But the day was sunny and mild as it went on. I continued getting ready for tomorrow's dinner, putting out clean tablecloths and napkins and carrying things around. Since I had taken the plants off the plant stand, I took the opportunity to clean it off. The Sparrowhawk vacuumed the mats that go underneath the plant stand, and the living room in general, and it looks much better. After that, however, he ran out of gas and had to take a nap.
I was trying to cheer myself up, because I received word this morning that Cabernet, one of the friends from my women's group, died of liver cancer. She had just gone into hospice. I named her Cabernet because she was a sweet, kind person who loved to go out with friends for a glass of wine and some charcuterie, loved adventures and fun when she had the chance. She cared deeply for friends and family. She will be greatly missed.
It seems silly to talk of mundane matters when such a momentous passage has just taken place. But the day does go on. I received an unexpected kindness that lifted my spirits. I heard a knock on the door, and went grumbling to answer it, expecting another window salesman or something. Instead, I saw my neighbors from the back of the yard. They had received an insurance check for damage done by the tree that fell down, and wanted to give me a 500 dollar share of it! We had not asked for nor expected anything from them, because it was our tree and we paid for it. This was really kind of them. The half-price Easter chocolate I ordered by mail finally arrived, too. I waited and shared it with the Sparrowhawk when he woke up. He still wasn't at his best, and basically had to go on break for the rest of the afternoon and take it easy.
I made a perfectly YUGE challah. It looks great, but I hope it's done on the inside. I didn't think it would be so big and fat, or I would have broken it up into two. Maybe. I kind of like its swaggering enormousness. I've also made a pot of fasolakia, Greek green beans cooked in olive oil with onions and tomato. I'm dissatisfied with the potluck signups and determined that people will have a good dinner regardless. No one is going to come to my house and not have a complete meal. So far, my stalwart pals Math Fairy and Calaveras are going to provide salad and potatoes, and La Pucelle is going to bring cupcakes. Some other sweet summer child is bringing spinach dip and chips, but I don't think spinach dip is really a proper vegetable. . . .
I really like the day name today. Majestic Loon is a description I aspire to deserve.
