Apr. 12th, 2026 08:13 pmThe temperature rose to an astonishing 75 degrees today! It felt even warmer, because I had the oven on for such a long time. First I baked the ham, and then Math Fairy texted to ask if she could put her potato casserole in the oven over here, because it wasn't quite done yet. Luckily I had declared the ham finished early, and had taken it out and cut it up into nice slices, so the oven was available. I propped the back door open to keep it from slamming in the gusty wind that brought in the warm weather. Our little dinner party was a big success, even though a couple of people opted out due to stomach troubles, so we only had 11 guests. (Not counting a two-year-old who came with his parents and had a fine time running around the house and eating cheese cubes and strawberries.) I provided ham, challah, cheese, fasolakia, and wine. Others contributed a potato casserole, hot spinach dip and chips, and a nice salad. The total plate was delicious--all the different flavors went together perfectly. La Pucelle, who trained as a pastry chef, brought festive cupcakes that had little frosting birds' nests on top, with three candy eggs in each. I supplied strawberries and cream. There were lively conversations across age groups. I think everyone had a good time, and we just feel sorry for the people who couldn't come.
Tomorrow--the roofers are coming! They have sent us an email warning us that our house will become a construction zone, and large objects may be falling from the rooftops, so we'd better be careful. Yeah, thanks. I plan to spend as much time as possible lolling about. I have enough ham and bread to make many sandwiches. Maybe I'll sit and read with a plate of sandwiches instead of the proverbial bon bons. Sardanapalus will envy me.
