Jun. 10th, 2017 08:52 pmYesterday I made a quick shopping run, and got some delicious gelato on sale--buy two, get three free. Chocolate, sea salt caramel, banana, lemon, and vanilla. The store has been selling wild caught Copper River salmon. It's a deep red color that looks wonderful, but the price is insane. Yesterday there were a couple of packages in the "Manager's Special" section, which is where they put things that won't be fresh enough to sell if they don't move quickly, and mark them down 50%. I got salmon and whitefish. The Sparrowhawk grilled them right away. Wow, that was good.
My other lucky purchase was at the bookstore, where a copy of Susan Branch's The Heart of the Home, her first book, a hand-lettered cookbook with charming little illustrations, turned up on the used book shelf. It has a lot of rather old-fashioned but well-tested recipes. The Sparrowhawk took a great interest in it, and made some tomato soup according to one of the recipes. That was really good, too, except I forgot to remind him to take the whole cloves out of it before pureeing! It was a tiny bit over-cloved as a result. We chatted about Nero Wolfe while he cooked. The Sparrowhawk is more of a meticulous Wolfeian cook. I fear I'm more the kind who would put too many juniper berries in the marinade--or, like Archie Goodwin, sneak out to the corner deli for some corned beef on rye. Not that the Sparrowhawk wouldn't--he's a big fan of a well-made Reuben.
It's too darn hot today, and will be even worse for the rest of the week. This doesn't help my exercise plan. We spent an hour working in the yard anyway. There was a stiff breeze, which helped to cool things off, but it was still too hot to stay out any longer. The Belmont was a disappointment! Irish War Cry was in the lead until the stretch, and then Tapwrit came up and took it away from him, as I feared. Now I have to go make some banana bread for the church picnic tomorrow.
