ismoI woke up this morning thinking that it would be really nice to abandon ship on all plans and go back to bed. But this picnic was sort of our idea, so I didn't want to bail. So I deviled the eggs, and we packed up everything in the cooler and a box in the back of the car, and drove over to church. I was glad that we did, because Miss Z was there on her last day before going away to Madison for college, and she came over and gave me a big hug and said she was so glad she got a chance to say goodbye. Aww. Today we did a blessing of the backpacks, and part of the collection money will go to buy backpacks for kids in Flint. Earlier, we made some little dangles for backpack zippers with helpful words spelled out in letter cubes--kindness, joy, fierce, create, and such like. One of the words I made was "magic," and it turned out Miss Z had taken that one. So I felt good about that too.
We met our friends at the park after church. The weather was in the 80s and 100% humidity, so I was expecting misery, but it was actually quite nice in the shade of the pavilion. In addition to cold chicken and deviled eggs, I brought tablecloths, plates, cups, silverware, and napkins. We have all these inexpensive reusable items, many of them left over from my parents, so it seems silly to use paper and make trash. We just pack it up, and then bring it home and throw it in the dishwasher. Other members of the group brought a curried rice dish, a superfood combo of grains, sweet potato and kale, a cucumber and tomato salad, a fruit salad, corn chips and bean dip, pita bread, iced tea, and cookies. It was quite a feast. We brought our croquet set, but we haven't met in awhile, and had a lot to catch up on, so the croquet didn't get played.
It was great to see everybody. I was glad we put in the effort and showed up. Friends make things better. It was also nice to get home and enjoy the cool quiet. We had to take a nap later. Too bad I had to finish things off with another long meandering phone call with my mother, but in spite of that it was a better day.
