Last night, there was a tremendous thunderstorm with pelting rain. I love the sound of really big fat raindrops hitting the roof. It's simultaneously liquid and percussive. This morning, however, the whole outside was like a big steam box, and our windows were steamy on the inside. It was really intolerable outdoors. I considered not going for a walk because I still felt pretty grumpy, but pulled myself together and decided to visit the mall. This is an expedient of last resort. There are few things like the mall to make me realize how much I don't love my fellow humans in spite of years of effort. The mall also makes me feel that I myself am an alien who made a big mistake in visiting this planet. The Sparrowhawk has been unable to visit the gym because of his eye, so he very kindly accompanied me on this trip, which made it a so much nicer experience. I also got to call his attention to my self-control in not giving the finger to the person who honked at me as I was trying to turn into the mall drive. He admired me accordingly.

The pants situation had become dire. I couldn't wear a t-shirt to mall walk in, because my last pair of pants had an incipient hole in them, and I needed a shirt with a long tail to cover my disgrace if the pants gave out. My package with two new pairs in it was waiting on the step when I got home. I haven't tried them on yet because TOO HOT.

I finished dismembering the chicken carcasses left after the picnic, while waiting for my soft-boiled eggs to boil, and made chicken broth.

The Sparrowhawk's eye is getting much better, and tomorrow morning, he goes for a revisit with the eye doctor to see if they can take off the temporary "bandage contact lens." The Minister had atrial fibrillation and had to go back to a special cardiac unit, but today she's better again. She still hasn't been able to get out of bed because she has too much pain.

Our son the Philosopher was planning to visit us for Labor Day. Tonight, he called my phone while I was listening to my mother's ruminations about her mother's house, Old Whatsisname, and various other topics, while watching some TV show she found completely incomprehensible and giving me a play by play in mid-conversation. So I motioned to the Sparrowhawk that he should call the Philosopher. It didn't sound good, what I could hear of it. Waah! When I hung up, I learned that my dearest Philosopher had broken his collarbone playing Frisbee. He's working from home in a sling, and has to have outpatient surgery on Wednesday to put the bones together so they'll heal. Waah! He says he has friends helping him. I'm so glad--but I wish I could be there and help him myself. I want bad things to stop happening.

Yipes! Too much at once.

(At least you didn't get sucked into a mall-strom of purchasing, which you'd inevitably regret the next day.)
