ismoThe weather is lovely and cool, for a few days. But I didn't get out in it, because I only had five hours of sleep again, and that screwed up my schedule quite a lot. This makes three or four days out of seven that I got less than six hours of sleep. That's not enough. Morpheus can be a fickle and spiteful godling.I was doing all right till about five in the morning, when I had a bad dream that made it impossible to go back to sleep. The part that wasn't quite so bad started out with living in the usual rambling and somewhat dilapidated house. All the houses in the neighborhood were set among huge old trees. As I watched from the back porch, one of the trees dropped a tremendous branch. There was no wind or any reason for it to fall. It simply crashed to the ground--soundlessly. The rest of the tree trunk split in half, and first one piece, then the other toppled and smashed into the ground. In amazement, I said, "The tree fell, and I was watching, but it didn't make a sound! Not a sound! Was it really soundless, or am I just not able to hear it?" There was no answer to that Zen-like question. I was worried, because I thought the other trees might fall just as randomly, and smash my house. And then came the really scary part, which I prefer not to describe, except to say that it left me lying awake saying to myself "Their habitat doesn't extend this far north! Not even with global warming!" But not believing myself.
Sigh. So then I was pretty much useless the rest of the day. The guy next door started removing a section of his driveway with an enormous concrete saw at eight o'clock in the morning. And then came the cement truck to lay a new patch in. I tried to take a nap a bit later, and slept for maybe half an hour, until the pharmacy cheerily called me to see if my asthma inhaler was up to date. It's a great pharmacy, and they do many good things, but I wish they hadn't. I did take apart the chicken remnants and make broth. I also called my mother's doctor and ascertained that they have all the records they need.
