Bilbo and Frodo's Birthday
Sep. 22nd, 2018 11:15 pmOur travelers, like Mary Poppins, stayed till the wind changed. And it did, yesterday. For several days, the weather had been unusually hot and steamy for September. Then, with thunder in the night and a pelting of rain, the wind began to blow. It blew the humid air to tatters and carried it away amid tumbling clouds. By evening, it was cool, with blue sky showing between rolls and flying skeins of leftover cloud.
The Diva was restless and maybe wanted to do something she could leave behind as a accomplishment. I have so often felt that when visiting my parents. She went out in the back yard and attacked the edges that needed weeding. I joined her, and we tore up masses of ivy, mint, and random biomass--enough to fill seven yard waste bags. Now there's a definite cleared area ready for me to plant the bulbs I ordered, when they arrive, which will be in the next couple of weeks. It was a marvelous achievement, and I am so happy every time I look back there and see what we did. She also dusted and vacuumed, ostensibly to clear up any hair the dogs might have shed, but they really don't shed that much. She summoned Muffinhead to play the guitar and sing the LotR song he made up for us, and he did so very goodnaturedly. He has real musical talent. At random hours, we would hear him softly harmonizing bits of tunes on the piano.
The Sparrowhawk had a book club meeting at our house yesterday night, so I took the rest of the crew out to dinner, and then a walk by the lake to enjoy the tossing of the leaves and rippling of the waters in the restless wind. When we came home, the club was nearly over. I called my mother, and then the Diva came and sat with us for awhile (asking, "Can I join the typing club?" because we were both typing on our Devices). She said they were planning to start for home in the morning.
So this morning, we fed and coffeed them one more time, and they loaded all their things and dogs into the car, along with the obligatory Bag of Random Food that I traditionally send along. This time it had the granola Kansas bought, a box of crackers, a bag of apples, half a loaf of bread, cheese, a stick of butter, and the leftover cookies. I figure you can survive for a few hours on bread and butter, cheese, and apples for a few hours in a pinch.
Besides, it's very hobbit-like, and today was Bilbo and Frodo's Birthday, as well as the Fall Equinox. We celebrated in a low-key way, with hobbit music playing and another walk among the trees, followed by a bit more pie. The house is very quiet now. "Summer's lease hath all too short a date." I have many precious memories, for sure, but "memory is not what the heart desires. That is only a mirror, be it clear as Kheled-zaram. Or so says the heart of Gimli the Dwarf. Elves may see things otherwise."
