Oct. 30th, 2018 09:40 pmGloomy night. Thunder. Rain. The Sparrowhawk is carving the jack-o'-lantern. For many years, we'd carve it in a great hurry when he got home from work, and put it out on the porch just before the trick or treaters started to arrive. Normally I do it, because I'm artistic and good with a knife (two things that CAN go together, though in action novels they seldom do). I think he's enjoying doing it himself this time around.
I had another one of those half-days. I woke up too early, and found the Sparrowhawk also up. We sat and drank morning beverages and watched the sky slowly pale and turn pink in the east. Then I had to go back to bed and take a nap. Theoretically, I can survive on five hours of sleep, but it's not a good idea. That laid waste to the day, as my father used to say of unforeseen events. I had many plans for what to do today, but only did a minimum of tidying and put away the laundry. The front yard that we raked yesterday is thickly covered in fallen leaves again.
We went to the bookstore for coffee for the first time in many days. I had promised my mother I'd scout around for some of the remaindered blank books she likes to give people at Christmas. I didn't see any. This is a puzzle. I hope I can find some for her. It wasn't as much fun being back at the bookstore as I had hoped. What a nice, cheerful person would think: "It's fun to come back and enjoy this place after such a long hiatus." Me: "I've been away too long and things have changed. Nobody remembers me. I don't like it."
I bought a rather large bag of candy for Halloween . . . but then I opened it . . . . I read a fascinating article about how Kit Kats are a coveted obsession and luxury item in Japan, including such flavors as shingen mochi, Tokyo Banana, and wasabi. My assortment contains only the plainest of the plain "fun size" regular Kit Kat. Still, I find it oddly consoling that my petty indulgence is also craved by fantastically rich and on fleek Japanese business executives. Chocolatory Sublime Bitter Kit Kat! It me!
