RedStag of Leave
Nov. 18th, 2018 09:24 pmI'm so sleepy I can't type. Not too surprising, since we got up at 4 am. I'm proud of myself for actually being packed and able to go to bed at 9 pm last night, but it didn't help me, because I couldn't sleep. We were up in the air before dawn, and saw the sun coming up, a thin thread of fire on the eastern horizon, flaring into a blaze. And then the person who had the window seat closed her shade. We lucked out when they offered to check bags for free, because the plane was crowded. So we checked ours, which was good because the trek from one terminal to another in Charlotte was just ridiculous. We had a long layover, so we had time to get coffee and eat our sandwiches. I try not to stare at people in airports, but it's hard, because all of their self-presentations are so various and so interesting. How they present themselves, who they think they are, who they want me to think they are . . . . One thing I think is unique to the upper midwest is the guy wearing a puffy coat on top and shorts underneath. At least, I've never seen it south of Wisconsin.
We were stuck on the runway for over an hour on the final leg, and it was kind of miserable. I developed a killer headache and had one of those "I can't I can't" moments when I contemplated all the steps we stil had to go through. They passed out little bottles of water, and I said to myself "Drink the water, just drink the water." It helped, and when we disembarked, I took some Advil and more water. And then we finally made it to the Diva's house, and she gave us coffee and another quart of water, and I was okay. The coastal light is always so bright and beautiful. We drove to the beach house and heard the waves roaring right below the house. The dunes are all washed away by the hurricane, and there are huge piles of sand that were plowed off the streets. You can see traces of the storm everywhere, but the house we rented is okay. The Diva brought sheets and towels, and I helped her make all the beds.
And I really am so sleepy I'm incoherent! My eyes keep closing.
