Buffalo of Ember
Dec. 4th, 2018 09:26 pmMy reserves of Nice are getting dangerously depleted. Like the Ogallala Aquifer, they have been over-pumped. But the essence of true niceness is that it doesn't quit in the middle and have a hissy fit. It keeps going until mission completion. And then pours itself a shot of Jack and a blue streak of cursing, in the privacy of its own home. So I won't get unnecessarily specific. I'll just list some of the things I think the world could do without, this holiday season: Passive-agressive vaguetexting. Withholding of information. Presumptuous assumptions. Reading incomprehension. Projection. Grudges. Yelling. Guilt-tripping. Martyrdom. Not asking for help and not appreciating it when it is offered. Mind-reading. Clambering onto the moral high ground and then vogueing all over it like a runway model. This has been a public service announcement. I'll tell you what I do like: Pretzels. Because you can BITE them and they go CRUNCH. Also Nutella, because it it silky and flavored with hazelnuts. I try to be judicious in my use of food for emotional purposes, but the holidays require more than therapy. On December 6 (St. Nicholas Day!) it will be legal to consume marijuana. Maybe I should bring brownies to Christmas dinner . . . . I observe that the Sparrowhawk has bought himself a pocket-size Krispy Creme cherry pie, so I conclude that he might be feeling the burn as well.
My mother's TAVR procedure has been scheduled for December 21, and she'll probably be discharged on December 24--hopefully to her home, possibly to the nursing care facility. The Duchess still says she wants to host Christmas dinner. I will go early, on the 21st, and assist with my mother. Or possibly do it all myself. It's unclear at this point. It will be another hotel Christmas! But I'm sure there will be many wonderful aspects to it . . . take a deep breath . . . .
The sun was shining beautifully today, for the first time in three weeks! I had all kinds of plans for stuff I wanted to get done. None of that happened. I did make the Advent wreath for the table, and went for a walk just before sunset. I'll have to hustle to get ready for our house guest who is arriving tomorrow afternoon. But hopefully, having the TAVR scheduled means some of the fuss will stop.
