My attempts to talk to my mother are making me sad lately. She's not doing well. On the other hand, I notice from one of my old notebooks that she was doing similar kinds of things two years ago, so she has had a lot of ups and downs. She got a notice from the cardiac clinic that she is to be there at 6 am on the day of her procedure. This will necessitate her getting up at 4 in the morning, and us probably getting up at 3 even though we will be staying nearby. This would be torture. The Sparrowhawk is going to call to see if she can possibly get admitted the night before so she'll be well-rested for the procedure. He has kindly agreed to do the call because he has more experience with pushing doctors around. I'm not hopeful, but if he can persuade them it would really help.

However, I have made three cakes today, so that is a happy accomplishment. I made a two-layer version of Laurie Colwin's gingerbread cake, a pound cake, and a flourless chocolate almond cake for my gluten intolerant sister in law. I've frozen the first two, and will freeze the third when it cools. Now I just have to make some lemon frosting and some chocolate frosting, and a glaze for the pound cake. I will take those with me and finish putting it on at the Duchess' house. The Sparrowhawk made two pots of soup: potato leek and bean soup cooked with a nice fat ham bone. We also froze that for consumption after Christmas. If you have soup and bread in the freezer, you can be comfortable whenever you get home.

so full of wisdom, you
