So many things didn't get done. But mostly nothing suffered from that but my pride, which dearly loves to be totally shiny and READY. Yesterday I woke up exhausted after four hours of sleep. (We stayed up late to finish the 1008-piece Zodiac puzzle so we could move it off the table and reclaim our eating space for when the guests arrived. After we finished it, we turned off the lights, and lo, it DOES glow in the dark as advertised! All the little stars in the middle, which were the hardest part to complete, depict the constellations that are portrayed as images around the edges. It's pretty cool.) After we finished the puzzle, we fell into bed and neither of us could sleep. So I didn't quite spring into action as I had hoped. Nonetheless, I went to the store and did a tremendous shopping. The problem is, we have to provide food for three different eating styles. The Redhead can't eat gluten. Raptor has very exigent food preferences. And then we also need the normal standard staples. So it's a bit of a job.

I got home and put a lot of stuff away, and then prepped the rabbit stew for dinner. I sauteed the fancy and regular mushrooms in butter, and then the onions, and then chopped up the rabbit and browned the pieces, and then deglazed the pot with red wine (ooh, fancy) and then added everything back into the pot, plus chicken stock, more red wine, fresh thyme and sage, potatoes and carrots. It simmered for two hours while I typed madly on my story, and then the Nipper and his family arrived. The stew perfumed the house nicely. We gave everybody snacks (in the grownups' case, cheese and wine) while I made the salad, and then served up the stew with salad and bread and butter. After dinner the Redhead drew in her sketchbook while the rest of us played Lord of the Rings Monopoly with Raptor.

Today we packed everything up and drove out here to the lake. We brought a lot of useful food items in a cooler. We made sandwiches and picnicked by the river, and then went to the beach. It was more crowded than we liked, but we found an acceptable spot and set up a small tent and an umbrella so the Redhead could keep out of the sun. Grandad and Grandmom kept an eye on Raptor so the kids could have a nice swim together and then we played water fights with Raptor. We all had to invent attacks like the ones in Pokemon. Mine were "Washing Machine," "Make it Rain," and "GO CRAZY!" I also simulated a shark and a crocodile. Then we stood in line for ice cream (socially distanced), played in the park, went back to the motel and got takeout from an Italian restaurant for dinner, and played Frozen Tag in the pool with Raptor for a long time. Raptor hung out with us while the Nipper went for a walk out on the pier to watch the sunset. He snuggled up on our big bed and played his Switch while eating a bowl of strawberries Grandmom fetched from the cooler. He already ate all the blueberries and a package of salami.I also read him Garfield en francais, which for some reason he really likes. He was thrilled that I could translate it for him without looking it up on Google Translate the way his dad does. "Daddy!" he cried when he father returned, "She really speaks French!" Well enough to translate Garfield, anyway. Who would have thought my education would result in such a triumph!

Also: my story is finished and is accepted by the editor, who has just a couple of rewrite suggestions, both very doable and not due until the end of July. A friend pronounced it "funny and sweet," which makes me very happy because that's what I was going for.
