We got lots of sleep last night. I had the usual restless night, woke up at 7, noticed the Sparrowhawk was just stirring, and decided to crawl back into bed so he wouldn't feel he had to get up with me. Surprisingly, we both went back to sleep for a couple of hours! This turned out to be a good thing, because he had been awake for awhile in the night, so he needed the extra. He is on the mend from whatever this was, and plenty of sleep helped.

The paradox of sleep is that when you don't sleep, you wake up early, but have no energy to profit by the extra time. When you get lots of sleep, you have energy, but the day is too short to profit by the energy! Frustrating all around. I guess it's better to sleep, because then at least you feel pretty good while not getting anything done. We went for a nice walk. The black walnut trees are completely stripped now. A few maples still hold their blazing red torches up against the sky. The beech leaves are fading to an ethereal gold, and the once-bright hickory leaves are getting brown and crisp around the edges, like cookies in the oven. The understory still holds a lot of green.

I didn't get out to work in the yard, because I wanted to call an old friend from PA who now lives in Minnesota with her daughter. It was her birthday today--75 years old! It was good that I did, because they were having a snowstorm and had to postpone their celebratory plans, so a chat was welcome. She put me on FaceTime to show me the snow all around. Brrr. I shuddered. Our turn is coming. i just try to soak in as much color as possible to store against the oncoming grey, white, and black. Then she gave me a tour of the house by phone, and tracked down the cats so I could say hello to them. Edward, who was the kitten of the house when we were neighbors, is now elderly, thin, and one-eyed. Goodness, how we do get old! He still carries himself like a dapper gent and has not lost his self-esteem.

The Sparrowhawk took the boxes I had packed for the kids to the post office, along with a birthday card for Queenie's younger daughter. I made potatoes and salad to complete the leftovers we had for dinner. That was about it, other than the usual tea, reading, and discussion. And texting with the Diva to chat about cookies and covid mental health. Or the lack thereof.
