Jan. 28th, 2024

This weekend was both good and not so good. The good part was the arrival of Tron and the Lumberjack for more birthday celebrations. All three of us are January birthdays. The Sparrowhawk is the odd man out, as his is in September. But he gets to be in a cluster too, with Raptor and Kansas. The not so good part was where the Sparrowhawk pulled a muscle in his back on Wednesday, and then did something that made it far, far worse on Friday, so he was in a lot of pain for a couple of days. This muted the celebration a little. But Tron and the Lumberjack were both pretty tired. The Lumberjack had been sick earlier, and the doctor finally decided it was probably mono. His stomach had recovered, but he was still fatigued. So we had a tasty lunch of giant calzones they picked up on the way here, while seated in front of a warm fire built by me because the Sparrowhawk was in no shape to carry wood, and then both of the kids got sleepy and took naps. So doing exciting stuff was not really necessary. Anyway, I was just as happy to sit by the fire.

We got takeout from a favorite restaurant for dinner so we wouldn't have to go out, and watched "Foreign Correspondent," which is an interesting and weird movie. The Lumberjack said it was a favorite of Goebbels--even though it's very anti-Nazi--because he considered it a propaganda masterpiece. The kids helped us out in a major way by taking the Christmas tree out to the curb. We had denuded it of its ornaments, but it really takes two to remove it, and I wasn't about to let the Sparrowhawk lend a hand. By Friday night, he was in so much pain that he needed help to get his clothes on and off and get into bed.

Saturday morning, we watched some House Hunters, and Tron brought coffee drinks and pastries for all, and then they went home. It rained heavily, and now the temperature is up to just above freezing, so the snow is gradually melting away. Saturday afternoon and today, the Sparrowhawk mostly sat and rested, and tonight he feels much better and can walk around slowly but almost normally. The PT at his gym said it would probably take 4-6 weeks for the muscle to heal completely. The Lumberjack chose chocolate cream pie for his birthday treat, and I made an ET cake for Tron. They left some of both behind when they went home. Let's just say I really, really need some exercise . . . .
