Chukar of Bluster
Feb. 19th, 2025 09:19 pmToday's big question was whether Madame would be able to go out to the bookstore cafe, for the first time in weeks. Mademoiselle informed me that she would be picking her mom up for a dental revisit around 1 pm. She was hopeful that I could induce Madame to have a good lunch before the appointment. So I was hoping that Madame would feel up to going out, since the odds of getting that good lunch would be greatly improved off the premises. It's been another beast of a freezing, uncomfortable day. Madame was flustered by my arrival. Her words of greeting were "Are you supposed to be here?" I think she had a vague memory that her daughter was coming, and worried that our plans would clash. I assured her that Mademoiselle knew all about it, and helped her get ready to go. It's really hard for her to pull herself together and figure out what to do to get ready. Finally I got her into the car, and she was excited to go on an excursion.
It's also very hard for her to figure out how to order food. I'm not sure she can really read the menu board any more. She was never entirely sure what "quiche" might be, and now she really doesn't get it. What happens now is that I try to figure out something she would like to eat, and say that I'm going to order that, and then she says she'll have the same. So we ordered two cups of broccoli cheddar soup, two pieces of quiche, and two lattes. The quiche technically had ham in it, but the tiny ham bits were so infinitesimal that she didn't notice them, so I declared it effectively vegetarian. She did have a good lunch, and I was so pleased. At least I got one thing done today. We were enjoying our coffee when Mademoiselle showed up. There was an unfortunate moment when Madame asked who was driving, exclaimed "But--where's my car?" and panicked a bit. We smoothed it over, but that car certainly is a burr under everyone's saddle. It's a mysterious phantom now, that moves around according to Madame's fancy of the moment.
I didn't accomplish much else in the day, except to send a birthday card to my sister in law. I also realized our book club was meeting again on Sunday, so I'd better read some more Dante, and did so. We had roast beef sandwiches for dinner, and they were indeed very satisfying. The Sparrowhawk went to the gym and came home quite bouncy, after an enthusiastic workout. He said he gave the credit to a long nap and red meat.
